Fractional CTO in Texas
"Fractional CTO" means a lot of different things in 2026. Here's exactly what I do, what I don't, and how the engagement works.
Most "fractional CTOs" are advisors — Notion docs, weekly Zooms, opinions in Slack, zero pull requests. That's a useful role for some teams, but it's not what I do. I embed as the lead engineer: I own the architecture, write production code every day, review every commit that goes through the team, and stay accountable for what ships. The work is technical, not advisory.
I'm based in The Woodlands, north of Houston. I work remote-first with clients across all of Texas. On-site days are common in Houston, Dallas, and Austin — I drive to most of them. For other Texas cities, on-site happens when it changes the outcome (a kickoff, an architecture review, a tough whiteboard session) but most of the work happens remote.
Pre-seed through Series A is the sweet spot. Teams of 1–10 people who've shipped something real, have early customers, and need senior technical judgment without the full-time CTO equity grant. If you've raised a Series B and have a 30-person engineering team, you don't need me — you need to hire a real CTO. If you haven't built anything yet, you need to build it before we talk.
$15,000/month. Three-month minimum, six-month maximum. No hourly billing, no tiered packages, no upsells. I take three clients at a time — when the seats are full, the door is closed until one opens. The pricing is calibrated so that a Texas seed-stage startup can afford a real senior engineer without burning the round on a single hire.
Because if I take five, I become an advisor instead of an engineer, and you stop getting the version of me you're paying for. Three clients is the upper limit at which I can still write production code, attend the meetings that matter, and respond when something breaks at 11pm on a Tuesday. The math is honest: more clients would mean less of me per client.
The four primary metros each have their own flavor — Houston skews energy, real estate, and medical-adjacent; Austin is SaaS, AI, and consumer; Dallas is enterprise B2B, fintech, and proptech; San Antonio is cybersecurity and defense. I've shipped engagements in all of these and a lot of others. If you're a Texas founder building software and you need senior technical judgment, the conversation is worth having regardless of vertical.
The 20-minute intro call exists for exactly this reason. If I don't think I can move the needle for your team, I'll tell you on that call and point you at someone who can. The three-month minimum exists so we both take the engagement seriously — past that point, you can wrap at the end of any month up to six months. You keep all the code and documentation either way.
